ALTERNATIVE AND NON-OBJECTIVE MUSLIM MALAY WORLDVIEWS IN DINA ZAMAN’S “KING OF THE SEA”: THROUGH THE LENS OF MAGICAL REALISM
Bahar, Ida Baizura
Hashim, Nor Kamal Nor
Literary reviews on King of the Sea (2012), a collection of nine short stories, by the Malaysian author Dina Zaman (b. 1969), have highlighted the theme of the supernatural through issues on the diversity of the Muslim Malay way of life. The text is a fictional narrative on the Muslim Malay beliefs and practices in the phenomenon of supernatural existence and how the influence of beliefs in the supernatural is inherent in the Malay culture. While literary critics agree that the stories are weaved with aspects of the magical to make it more culturally acceptable as a social reality, Bradley (2012: 206), however, contests this view by describing it as Dina’s transient and elusive attempt at magical realism although he concedes that there exist some vague impressions of it. Here, magical realism is understood to be fantastical elements which are miraculous, yet seen as ordinary, and ordinary as miraculous where the reality is not abandoned but is extended. Focussing on Dina’s depictions of supernatural beliefs among the Muslim Malay characters, this paper aims to discover how the alternative and non-objective Muslim Malay worldviews are demonstrated by the author in King of the Sea using the understanding of magical realism as conceptualised by Maggie Ann Bowers (2004). The findings show that Dina depicts the alternative and non-objective Muslim Malay worldviews of the Muslim Malay characters as grounded in their beliefs in the local Malay superstitions, myths and legends reflected through literary elements which are indeed characteristics of magical realism.

LOCAL AND TARGET CULTURE MATERIALS: INSIGHT INTO TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVES
Asanti, Chris
Syamdianita, Syamdianita
Local and target culture materials, ELT
In this contemporary world, English is used to link the communication among people internationally for different universal purposes (Crystal, 2003; Jenkins, 2010; and Kirkpatrick, 2011), for instance, educational advancement, career development, technology, and international relation. It is obvious that the function of English during this period of time has made some countries generate policies to include English as one of the compulsory subjects being taught at schools. However, the materials which are used in school practices are likely to focus on the target culture materials. Due to this reason, it seems that the role of local and target cultures in teaching the language should be taken into consideration. Related to the status of English to the importance of culture in language learning, this research aims at investigating English teachers’ perspectives on the appropriateness of materials in English Language Teaching. In order to get broader pictures, questionnaires and interview were conducted to two English teachers in Samarinda. The results were interesting as both teachers preferred to expand the materials rather than used the readily materials provided by the school and/or the institution. This created them to become material developers and creators. Other results showed that the teachers were aware of the importance of the cultural content in the materials, thus culture functioned as ‘a filer and a connecting bridge’ in ELT.

THE INFLUENCE OF PARENTING STYLE ON THE PROTAGONIST’S BEHAVIOR IN TODDPHILLIPS’ MOVIE JOKER
Aprillia Risqi, Ratna
Ekalestari, Susi
parenting styles, behavior, criminal, mental illness, authoritarian styles, authoritative styles, permissive styles, neglectful styles, psychopath
The research focuses on the influence of parenting style on the protagonist’s behavior in Todd Phillips’ movie Joker. Arthur as the protagonist in the movie is a man who suffers from mental illness which then transforms him to be a mastermind of criminal because of parenting mistake. The theory adopted in this research is proposed by Baumrind, who classifies parenting style into four broad categories: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglectful styles. This research adopts descriptive qualitative method and the data are collected from the movie script. The finding reveals that authoritarian and neglectful parenting styles lead a person to become rebellious, adopting problematic behavior and mastermind of criminal and disregarded by a society. The worst effect of parenting mistakes is that the protagonist transforms himself to be a psychopath.

The design of the development of learning methods involves the pattern of organizing elements or components in the curriculum. the development of learning materials listening to correlated core-based learning with the application of listening in action methods seen from two dimensions, namely horizontal and vertical dimensions. The horizontal dimension is related to the compilation of the scope of learning content. This spatial arrangement is often integrated with the learning and teaching process. The vertical dimension concerns the compilation of material sequences based on the order of difficulty. Arranged materials start from the easy ones, then go to the more difficult ones, or start with the basic ones followed by the continuation. This development describes in detail about the components that must be present in each listening learning material that can be used for the learning process. The design of the development of the listening learning material consists of several components, including the objectives of the curriculum, teaching materials or the material or content of the curriculum, teaching strategies or teaching methods, teaching media and teaching evaluation and improving teaching. These components are related to each other in the development of learning materials listening to correlated core-based learning by applying listening in action methods.

GRAMMATICAL METAPHOR REPRESENTATIONS AND TRANSGRAMMATICAL SEMANTIC DOMAINS IN THE SOCIAL CONTEXTS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING IN INDONESIA
Saragih, Amrin
grammatical metaphor, transgrammatical semantic domain
Grammatical metaphor refers to the coding of meaning or experience in the manner as if the meaning or experience were coded by another lexicogrammatical coding. Metaphorical representation implies that there are two manners of coding, namely the congruent or literal and incongruent or metaphorical coding. Transgrammatical semantic domains extends meaning by a range of grammatical units. Transgrammatical semantic coding implies that agnated meanings are realized by more than one semantic unit. Grammtical metaphor representation inherently contains transgrammatical coding. This paper addresses grammatical metaphor commonly used in texts of science, technology and academics, which are very difficult for Indonesian students to understand and translate into good bahasa Indonesia (BI). By applying knowledge or competence of gramatical metaphor and transgrammatical semantic domain Indonesian students are expected to effectively learn the meaning of English text of science, technology and academics and to translate the texts into good BI.

BODILY OPPRESSION AND INTERACTION: A SPATIAL ANALYSIS ON MRS. DALLOWAY
Li, Tingting
Mrs. Dalloway; bodily Oppression; Interaction
Virginia Woolf is one of the most influential novelists in British literature and also one of the pioneers who leads the trend of literary modernism. Just as artists engaged in Cubic painting and sculpture in the same developmental period, such modern novelists as Virginia Woolf were keenly aware of the significant influence of space on their artistic creation. Therefore, this essay tries to explore the interrelation between men and space through analyzing Woolf’s modernist masterpiece—Mrs. Dalloway. Focusing on Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith, this essay aims to interpret how they struggle against bodily oppressions, namely the restraints and controls imposed on the individual body by the external space, and how they make an effort to interact with space as a way out. Clarissa’s interaction with space involves her participation in constructing urban space through walking, directly affecting the external space; at the same time, urban space also affects her internal space by cheering her up when she walks in the city. And as for Septimus, he integrates into space by committing suicide so that his flesh is eventually decomposed to dust and returns to nature. By analyzing all those, this essay tries to argue that modern society not only makes people suffer from spatial oppression but also offers new opportunities and development prospects, enabling people to liberate themselves from numerous oppressions and create positive integration and communication with their surrounding space, which finally reaches a balanced state.

figurative language, simile, song lyric
The research was related to figurative language but the researchers focused on simile, aimed at identifying the dominant type of simile used based on the theory put forward by Kennedy and Giola. Simile is a comparison of one thing to another which is always listed because the words "like" or as are used. Simile is also commonly used in song lyrics and this is referred to as the object of the research, that is the song lyrics taken by Lenka’s song Everything at Once. The researchers take this song because all the lyrics are full of similes, from the beginning to the end of the song. Qualitative content analysis as the use of replicable and valid methods to make specific inferences from the text to other circumstances or properties of the source under the Descriptive Qualitative Approach, pioneered by Krippendorff is applied here. The results show that there are two types of simile in this song and the dominant types used in this song is close simile.

ETHNIC RELATIONS AND ETHNOCENTRISM IN SELECTED MALAYSIAN SHORT STORIES
Rahman, Ahmad Zufrie Abd
Bahar, Ida Baizura
Malaysian short stories, ethnocentrism, denial, defense, minimisation
The issues of the ethnic diversity of the Malaysian way of life, have been explored in scholarship on Fernando’s selection of Malaysian Short Stories (2006), consisting of six fictional narratives on life in pre-independence Malaya namely “Nannan and A Certain Cry” by Cynthia Anthony, “Ratnamuni” by K.S. Maniam, “Pasang” by Pretam Kaur, “The Third Child” by K.S. Maniam, and “Birthday” by M. Shanmugalingam, through the lens of post-colonialism. The stories have been described as an exceptional compilation due to the fact that Fernando is able to assemble stories written by authors from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures other than their own but we argue in this paper that the short stories do not contain intercultural sensitivity as they depict more ethnocentric orientations. We define ethnocentric experiences here as interculturally-sensitive elements which trigger a series of complex emotions in avoiding cultural differences either by denying their existence, raising defences against them, or by minimising their importance. Using the understanding of ethnocentrism as conceptualised by Milton J. Bennet (2013) as part of his Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, we attempt to examine the type of ethnocentric experiences depicted by the authors through selected characters in two out of the six short stories. Our findings demonstrate that the three types of ethnocentric experiences, denial, defense and minimisation of cultural differences, are indeed found embedded in the unconscious minds of the authors through their portrayals of selected characters, which in turn provide a platform of cultural fertilisation in Malaysian pluralistic society.

PROBLEMS IN MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY: FROM LANGUAGE POLITENESS TO HATE SPEECH
Rangkuti, Rahmadsyah
Lubis, Andi Pratama
multicultural society, language politeness, hate speech, cultural diversity, local wisdom
Indonesia is known as a nation that has many privileges such as cultural diversity and local wisdom. Cultural diversity that includes ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity is a gift and grace from God Almighty that must be managed and well maintained by all elements of the nation. Caring for diversity and harmonization in multicultural society in the era of information technology or globalization is the biggest challenge of the day. The goal is to maintain harmony and unity in the midst of a multicultural society. In such conditions the ability and understanding of the language politeness play an important role in maintaining the harmonization of multicultural society. Based on that, this article aims to reveal that the problems that can threaten the unity and integrity of this republic are not only derived from differences of certain political and ideological attitudes, but may also originate and begin from languages impoliteness to hate speech. Applying language politeness theory proposed by Pranowo (2009) which extracted values embedded the local wisdom of the Indonesian is considered capable in anticipating hate speech actions. Thus harmonization in multicultural society in Indonesia can be well maintained.

This research was aimed at seeing the protagonist's characters portrayed in the novel Paper Towns by John Green. The research applied the theory of Flat and Round Character proposed by E. M. Forster (1993). This research follows qualitative descriptive method proposed by Creswell (2003), an effective model that occurs in a natural setting that enables the researcher to develop a level of detail from being highly involved in the actual experiences. The result of the analysis shows that the significant protagonist's characters in the novel are distinctive self-disclosure, great ambition and affection. All the distinctive characters drive the protagonist to break the string with the people around her and bring a conflict with her parents.

Hudayani, Nurul
Peer assessment, Autonomous Learning, writing
Working collaboratively with peers is one of the aspects that define learner autonomy. Peer assessment is a growing solution for writers to get an improvement. It allows students to work socially since they will know strengths and weaknesses of learning. Regarding to previous related studies, peer assessment in writing encourages students to be active and take a part of their own writing progress with their peers. (Ashley Landry, 2014). Furthermore, peer assessment can contribute and trigger student’s autonomous learning. (Kulsirisawad, 2012). It is also viewed as another way of challenging students dependence on the teacher for feedback and guidance in their language learning to emphasize learner autonomy and cooperation to get students involved and learn as much from each other as they can from the teacher (Hamid Ashraf, 2015). In this research, the writer applied peer assessment in Writing I class by considering some beneficial effects over student’s writing proficiency within the autonomous learning context as the Writing I is the beginning writing course in English Department of UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. The aim of this research to investigate the process of autonomous learning situation through peer assessment in Writing I class and find out the outcome of peer assessment in Writing I class. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of consisted of 4 classes, consist of 119 students fourth semester. The instrument of collecting data is writing test. THE JOURNEY TO REDEMPTION: A STUDY OF THE VIOLENCE IN NORMAN MAILER’S THE NAKED AND THE DEAD
Zhang, Lingpo
The Naked and the Dead; violence; redemption; totalitarianism
The Naked and the Dead, as Norman Mailer’s first and representative work, is not only the most classical war fiction, but also the most controversial work since World War II. The war is used as a background to explore various problems emerging in American society. Throughout history, violence has always played an important part in human development, and promoted the development of human society. War as the extreme manifestation of violence causes great significance on human history. During the time of World War Two, people lives under the shadow of totalitarianism, the situation is especially serious in the U.S. Army. Some of the soldiers are transformed to war machines with neither personal will nor identity. In Mailer’s mind, violence and creativity have a twin-like relation, if we cut all the violence out of society, we also cut out all the creativity, and violence becomes the resolution which people employ with to regain their humanity, so as to have self-redemption. Croft’s failure of conquering Mount Anaka fully revels there is still possibility that human can be redeemed.

ADULTERY IN MOCHTAR LUBIS’ NOVEL SENJA DI JAKARTA

adultery, visualization, mental, physics
The research is concerned with types of adultery based on the plot giving pictures of immoral behavior of some of the major characters committing adultery. Some of them are married, and some are not. They are brave and not ashamed of doing this immoral deed because they are not close to the doctrine of their own religion that prohibits them doing this shameful behavior. They do not even seem to be afraid of doing something which is regarded as a very sinful deed. Adultery is a sexual relationship in which a man or women has with another partner rather than his/her own spouse. Adultery is seen as a great sin in the society. Adultery maliciously interferes with marriage relations, and sometimes opens the door to divorce. (Dillon, 2016). The research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method designed to obtain information which is concerned with the current status of phenomena that occur naturally. (Ary, 1972). The results show that there are three types of adultery committed by the major characters: Visual, Mental and Physical Adulteries.

THE BAPTISM OF A PRODIGAL SON IN MARILYNNE ROBINSON’S GILEAD
Sun, BiXia
Marilynne Robinson; Gilead; ritual baptism; spiritual baptism
As a contemporary American female writer, a devout Christian, Marilynne Robinson gets her religious thoughts fully manifested in her Gilead. The novel is actually a home epistle that an aged and ailing father Ames passes to his 7-year-old innocent son, which narrates the three priesthood generations’ life changes from the Civil War to 1956 by making use of Ames’s first-person narration. However, the outsider John Ames Boughton (Jack) has been subject to diverse academic interest, which proves that he dominates an important textual place. This research makes the priest Ames’s baptism for prodigal Jack as an entry point. Ames has baptized Jack and has to reluctantly confer the name “John Ames” to Jack under the request of his bosom friend Boughton. Due to Ames’s mixed feelings (jealousy) in addition to Jack’s own diverse prodigality, Ames does not want to accept Jack at all. With the focus on the tiny difference between the religious ritual baptism and the true meaning of baptism in the novel, this research aims to put forward that the priest Ames has dilemma in conveying the Bible doctrine “love your neighbors”. However, at the end of novel, after seeing the unacceptable prodigal’s love and responsibility toward his old father, colored wife and interracial son, Ames starts to introspect his inappropriate attitude toward Jack. Under the guidance of the divine epiphany, Ames is willing to accept Jack and to give Jack the spiritual consolation. By analyzing Ames’s inner conflicts between his own “covetise” and the divine epiphany—the developmental process of Ames’s acceptance of unacceptable prodigal godson, this paper hopes to argue that the last blessing Ames gives to Jack reveals that Ames’s divine epiphany overwhelms his human nature—covetise which enables him to accept even to love the unacceptable people or unpleasant things in life so as to make faith and spiritual pursuit truly become a part of contemporary life.

She always worries about the future of her sister’s children. This research applied the theory of worry proposed by Graham (2006), who said that worry is “prominent feature of most anxiety-based disorders including generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder“. The research is completed by using descriptive qualitative method in which the finding is presented in the form of description. The data of this study is obtained from the novel Family Ties by Danielle Steel. The analysis finds that the dominant causes of the protagonist’s worry come from her nephews’ life which affects her life negatively. The effects of her worry will be a lesson for human life because every human being certainly has worry feeling in their life in certain situations.

CONTESTING THE ASIAN FEMALE IDENTITY THROUGH TRANSCULTURALISM IN RICE WITHOUT RAIN
Shamsuddin, Syamsina Zahurin Binti
Bahar, Ida Baizura
Minfong Ho, Asian female identity, transculture/ality and identity fluidity, Rice without Rain.
Rice without Rain (1986), written by the Chinese American writer, Minfong Ho (b. 1951), has been recognised internationally and awarded with numerous awards including Best Books for Young Adults (1991). Set in Thailand, the text is believed to have been overlooked in regards to works by Ho as scholarships on the issue of the Asian female identity through the lens of transculturalism are scarce. Previous scholarship on Rice without Rain, for example, focused more on the general identity of the female characters through the concepts of a “whole” self and female “space” for Thai and American-born Thai young women (Thongthiraj, 2006). We hypothesise here, however, that the true identity of the Asian female is reflected through the depiction of Jinda in Rice without Rain which is believed to contain the concepts of transculture/ality and identity fluidity. Here, we explore the concept of transculture/ality by the transcultural scholar, Arianna Dagnino (2015), as a platform to contest the current understanding of the Asian female identity by the scholar of English and Comparative Literature, Lalaine Yanilla Aquino (2011) who states that the Asian female identity is recognized culturally as powerless, voiceless and submissive. We examine how transculturalism forms the identity of the protagonist using the concept of transculture/ality by Dagnino and identity fluidity by the cultural theorist Stuart Hall (2011). Findings of this paper demonstrate the application of transculture/ality and identity fluidity in a work of literature revealing that Jinda contests the stereotypical understanding of the Asian Female identity reflecting transculture/ality and identity fluidity.

QUESTIONING TECHNIQUES AND HIGH ORDER THINGKING IN STUDENTS LEARNING GROUP
Nikmah, Ria Dhatun
questioning techniques, high order thinking, learning group
Questioning is an essential strategy for effective communication. This study examined questioning techniques used by students and the Critical thinking processes involved in questioning. There was also an attempt to find out the differences between the patterns of using questions between the two groups. Data were sourced from student learning group through audio and video taping the sessions and were analyzed using types of questioning. Findings indicated that students asked higher order in level questions such as open - ended, interpretive, and evaluative, inquiry, inferential, and synthesis, while most students raised lower cognitive questions including facts, closed, direct, recall, and knowledge type questions. It is suggested that using higher level questioning technique, more frequently used by teacher as more competent speakers in comparison to students, can foster learning and students are required to attend higher levels of questioning techniques to enhance their speculative, inferential and evaluative thinking ability

PROPAGATING CRITICAL READING AND CREATIVE WRITING LITERACY USING READER’S DIGEST MAGAZINES
Mustapha, Wan Zumusni Wan

authentic materials, critical thinking, creative writing, Reader’s Digest magazines, ESL reading program
Reading and writing have been seen as solitary, boring and individualized among ESL learners. Hence, teaching and learning critical reading and creative writing, can pose even a challenge to educators and learners of a second language, at all levels. The challenge is even greater in the digital era where students would rather spend time online on gadgets than flipping pages of magazines. As a receptive skill, reading a textbook outside the classroom would be next to impossible. This paper shares how second language educators can use an authentic material like Reader’s Digest magazines to propagate fun, engaging and outdoor critical reading and creative writing activities. It incorporates various elements such as team building, collaborative learning and problem-based learning while engaging students to learn vocabulary, sentence construction and paragraph writing in an outdoor setting.

REDUPLICATION IN SUNDANESE LANGUAGE
Nurhayati, Iin
Mahdi, Sutiono
Reduplication, suffix, infix, prefix
Linguistically speaking, Sundanese has a wide range of reduplicated words and as well delivers different meaning in a different words form wherever it be added by suffixes, infixes, or prefixes. This research try to presents and classify kinds of reduplication in Sundanese, in which stage they belong and how they can be different or not semantically and morphologically, and how they can presumably be similiar or different from one another. The data collection will involve correspondence to be asked about some word that can be reduplicated, using semantics and morphology as the approach to see the occurrence. Based on the data that has been investigated and classified, Sundanese reduplication can be applicable to all semantics properties. Thus, if Augmentation can be expressed by Sudanese reduplication, so does Diminution. On the other hand, if intensification can also be expressed by means of reduplication in Sudanese, so attenuation can also be expressed by Sudanese reduplication. Also if Sudanese root word is bound by affixation whether it be in prefix, infix, or suffix, its lexical and grammatical meaning can changed.

MORAL VALUES IN ANDREA HIRATA’S NOVEL AYAH
Kandri, Kandri
Suhadi, Jumino
Manugeren, M.
moral values, hard work, self-confidence
The research deals with moral values. Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individual’s behavior and choices. Individual’s morals may derive from society and government, religion, or self. When moral values derive from society and government they, of necessity, may change as the laws and morals of the society change. (Harris, 2012). There are two points of moral values analyzed in the novel. The first is hard work and the second is self-confidence and both are depicted through the words and actions of the major characters. Hard work is the key to success. Hard work always pays off. Hard work can turn sludge into gold. Hard work starts from where people stop looking for alternatives. (Tollander, 2011); the second is self-confidence, a belief in one’s own ability when doing anything, by viewing things positively and realistically (Albert, 2010). The research is conducted by descriptive qualitative method proposed by Creswell (2010). The results show that there are two points of moral values in the novel. The first is hard work and the second is self-confidence and both of the points are described by the major characters.

CONVERSATION AND COMMUNITY BUILDING IN PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Han, Sisi
Pride and Prejudice; Community Building; Conversation
The thematic research on Jane Austen’s novels has been widely carried out, including marriage, gender, morality, politics, etc. The conception of community is also an important theme for her novels are set in a period when the notion of community is conceived and reinforced in the West. It is a transitional age that witnesses the change from the 18th century when the feudal aristocracy controls the agricultural economy to the 19th century which is dominated by the middle class as a result of the Industrial Revolution. However, the theme of community has not got enough critical attention and its research is sparse. Thus, this dissertation seeks to explore Austen’s contribution to the conception of community in Pride and Prejudice. Austen’s imagination of community is effectively displayed in Pride and Prejudice and conversation serves as a key approach. The Community is built at two levels, namely, familial level and social level. By means of conversation, a family bond based on mutual affirmation, which is the core of community building, is forged; and a community of spirit, the highest form of community, is established among social interactions outside families in two social spaces– Meryton and Pemburley. A stereoscopic vision of a community built by conversation emerges when the three levels are closely intertwined.

This research focuses on social values reflected in Tere Liye’s novel entitled Hujan. The research is aimed at revealing the kinds of social values in the novel. Soekanto (1982) states that social value is a concept in a man in a society about what is considered good and bad, beautiful or not and right or wrong. In this reserach, the theory of social values is proposed by Djamaris (1993) who claims that social values can be divided into ten kinds namely Affection, Forgiveness, Obedience, Courtesy, Deliberation, Mutual Cooperation, Sympathy and Empathy, Wisdom, Respecting Others, and Responsibility The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative and structural objective approach developed by Semi (1985). The research result shows that seven kinds of social values are found in the novel: Love, Forgiveness, Obedience, Mutual Cooperation, Wisdom, Respecting Others, and Responsibility. However, the most dominant social value found in the novel is affection; which is reflected mainly from parents and friends.
